What is Nutritional Counseling?

Nutrition counseling is an individualized tailored approach that a health professional with specialized training in nutrition takes to help an individual create and maintain lifestyle changes. A nutrition counselor may look at several aspects of a person to better understand them as a “whole” person since there are many different factors that play a role in creating and changing lifestyle patterns. Nutritional counseling may provide an individual with dietary education, individualized meal plans, and support to help create and maintain lifestyle changes.

How does Nutritional Counseling work?

Nutritional counseling is typically a collaborative relationship between an individual and their health professional. The first session will usually start with an in-depth interview for better understanding an individual as a whole and what their goals are. From there the nutrition counselor will work together with the client to create an individualized treatment plan that identifies lifestyle areas the client would like to change and how to create and produce those changes. The client and nutrition counselor will also identify potential barriers to change, provide guidance to overcome those barriers, and work together throughout the process to implement and achieve the new goals.
